Tom James, the managing director of Turfcare Leisure, has been involved in the maintenance of golf courses and bowling greens for many years and has held post of both Head Greenkeeper and Course Manager at prestigious golf courses in the area.  In 1990 he formed a company called Tom James (Turf-care) and started to sub-contract to a golf course construction company in addition to maintaining bowling greens.  Justin Jeffs started to work alongside Tom at this stage, both on the construction of golf courses, but with a particular interest in the bowling green maintenance area of the business.

The first bowling green that we maintained was Eaton Socon Bowling Club and it was Tom who at this stage put together a plan that would enable his company to carry out all the work required to ensure a high standard green by providing all the materials and labour necessary.  The breakthrough was to allow the cost of all this work to be divided into 12 monthly payments ensuring better budgeting for the club and regular cash-flow for the company.  This still happens today with all of our bowling greens and golf courses.

The first golf course to be maintained by the company resulted in the employment of the first member of staff.  This was quickly followed by contracts at Lakeside Lodge Golf Club and Cambridge Meridian Golf Club (now Cambridge National Golf Club), gradually increasing in number to the 7 we have today.  Qualified and experienced greenkeepers were found to fill the positions required.

Justin held the post of Head Greenkeeper whilst completing a qualification in business and finance.  Tom and Justin worked very closely together at this stage to manage and encourage the growth of the business whilst maintaining a direct "hands on" approach.  Such was the success of their partnership and the management of the business that, in 1995, Turfcare Leisure Services Limited was formed.

In 1997, we presented the course at Abbotsley when it staged the Ladies Engalnd Intermediate Championships.  At the same time as this, the bowls department ensured a good playing surface for a prestigious England versus Israel international match on one of our greens in Cambridge.  Both occasions were a great success.

The bowls department continued to expand and required the purchase of more vehicles and staff to undertake the work required to fulfil our popular Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze autumn programmes, and of course, our ever increasing Premier, Standard, and Economy bowls maintenance comtracts.

With the company still continuing to grow we now maintain over 50 bowling greens situated from Colchester to Putney (London) to Corby Glen (Lincolnshire) and hold contracts with 7 golf clubs.  We still continue to construct golf greens (recently at St. Neots Golf Club) and continue to be involved in the maintenance of both golf and bowling greens.

Our continued quest is to ensure that all of our customers receive a high standard of care from our staff, and we are committed to the continued improvement of our services.
